What is Avalanche?

Avalanche (AVAX) is a fast, low-cost layer-1 blockchain that launched in 2020, created by Ava Labs and founded by Emin Gün Sirer. It uses the Avalanche consensus protocol, which lets validators agree on transactions in about a second through repeated random sampling rather than mining.

Avalanche's main network includes the C-Chain, which is compatible with Ethereum so developers can use the same tools and smart contracts. A key feature is the ability to launch custom blockchains, known as Avalanche L1s (previously subnets), with their own rules, tokens and validators. Games, financial institutions and enterprises use these to run dedicated networks for their own apps.

AVAX pays transaction fees, which are burned, and is staked by validators and delegators to secure the network. Its supply is capped at 720 million tokens. Avalanche is also active in tokenization, with several asset managers and banks using it for tokenized funds and pilots.
