What is BNB?
BNB is the native coin of BNB Chain and the utility token of the Binance ecosystem, the world's largest crypto exchange by trading volume. It was launched in 2017 as an ERC-20 token and later moved to Binance's own blockchain. Originally it was mainly a way to get discounted trading fees on Binance, but its role has grown well beyond that.
On BNB Smart Chain, an EVM-compatible network, BNB is used to pay gas fees and to stake with validators that secure the chain. The network hosts a large ecosystem of DeFi apps, games and token launches, and its low fees made it one of the busiest blockchains by daily users. On the exchange, BNB still gives fee discounts and access to token launch programs.
BNB has a deflationary design. A quarterly auto-burn removes coins from circulation based on price and block production, and part of every gas fee is burned in real time. The long-term goal is to reduce total supply to 100 million BNB.
