The BlackRock USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund (BUIDL) is a tokenized money market fund launched in 2024 by BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager, together with tokenization firm Securitize. It invests in cash, US Treasury bills and repurchase agreements, and it pays holders a yield close to short-term US interest rates.
Each BUIDL token is designed to stay at one dollar, with interest paid out as new tokens every month. Because the fund lives on a blockchain, shares can be transferred around the clock between approved investors, and holders can swap into USDC through a dedicated smart contract. BUIDL has expanded from Ethereum to several other networks.
The fund is only available to qualified institutional investors, but it plays a big role in crypto markets. Several stablecoins and DeFi protocols hold BUIDL as part of their reserves, and exchanges have started accepting it as collateral for trading.
