What is Stacks?

Stacks (STX) is a blockchain designed to bring smart contracts and decentralized apps to Bitcoin. It launched in 2021 after years of development, originally under the name Blockstack. Stacks settles its transactions on Bitcoin, which means its history is anchored to the Bitcoin blockchain.

The network uses Proof of Transfer, a consensus method where miners spend bitcoin to mine new blocks and STX holders can lock their tokens, known as stacking, to earn bitcoin rewards. The Nakamoto upgrade made Stacks faster, and sBTC lets bitcoin be moved onto Stacks and used in DeFi apps while staying tied to real bitcoin.

STX is used for transaction fees, smart contract execution and stacking. Stacks is one of the best-known projects in the growing Bitcoin layer-2 and "BTCFi" space.
