What is Cosmos Hub?

Cosmos Hub (ATOM) is the central chain of Cosmos, an ecosystem often called the "internet of blockchains". Cosmos provides open-source tools that let teams build their own independent blockchains that can still communicate with each other.

Two technologies make this possible. The Cosmos SDK is a toolkit for building blockchains quickly, and many well-known networks were built with it. The Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol (IBC) lets these chains send tokens and data to each other securely. The Cosmos Hub was the first chain in this network and launched in 2019.

ATOM is used to stake with validators who secure the Cosmos Hub, to pay transaction fees and to vote on governance proposals. Holders can also take part in the hub's security services for other chains.
