What is Dogecoin?
Dogecoin (DOGE) started in 2013 as a light-hearted fork of Litecoin, created by Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer and named after the popular Shiba Inu "doge" meme. What began as a joke turned into one of the most widely recognized cryptocurrencies, with a loyal community known for tipping, charity drives and social media culture.
Dogecoin uses proof-of-work mining with the Scrypt algorithm and is merge-mined with Litecoin, which means miners can secure both networks at the same time. Blocks arrive about once a minute and fees are low, making DOGE practical for small payments and tips.
Unlike Bitcoin, Dogecoin has no maximum supply. Around 5 billion new DOGE are created every year, so the inflation rate slowly falls as a percentage of total supply. Support from high-profile figures, including Elon Musk, and acceptance by some merchants have kept it among the top cryptocurrencies by market value.
