What is Ethereum?
Ethereum (ETH) is a programmable blockchain that lets developers build applications which run exactly as written, without a company controlling them. Proposed by Vitalik Buterin in 2013 and launched in 2015, it introduced smart contracts to a wide audience and became the foundation for most of decentralized finance (DeFi), NFTs, stablecoins and tokenized assets.
ETH is the network's native currency. Every transaction and smart contract call pays a fee in ETH, and part of that fee is permanently burned, which can offset new issuance during busy periods. Since "The Merge" in 2022, Ethereum has used proof-of-stake: validators lock up 32 ETH to propose and confirm blocks, cutting the network's energy use by more than 99%.
To keep fees low, Ethereum's roadmap centres on layer-2 rollups such as Arbitrum, Optimism and Base, which process transactions off the main chain and post compressed data back to it. The main chain acts as the secure settlement layer, while rollups handle everyday activity.
