What is Ethereum Classic?
Ethereum Classic (ETC) is the original Ethereum blockchain that continued after a split in 2016. That year, a hack of a project called The DAO drained millions of dollars' worth of ether. Most of the community agreed to reverse the hack through a hard fork, creating today's Ethereum, while a group that believed blockchain history should never be changed kept running the original chain as Ethereum Classic.
Ethereum Classic supports smart contracts in the same style as Ethereum, but it still uses proof-of-work mining. When Ethereum switched to proof-of-stake in 2022, many miners moved to ETC.
ETC has a fixed maximum supply of about 210.7 million coins, with block rewards reduced by 20% every five million blocks. Its motto, "code is law", reflects its focus on unchangeable history and resistance to censorship.
