What is Filecoin?
Filecoin (FIL) is a decentralized storage network that lets people rent out unused hard drive space and lets others store data on it. It was created by Protocol Labs, the team behind IPFS, a popular system for sharing files across the internet without a central server. Filecoin's mainnet launched in 2020.
Storage providers earn FIL by storing data and proving, again and again, that they still hold it correctly, using cryptographic proofs. Clients pay FIL to store their files and retrieve them later. The network is used to preserve large amounts of public data, including scientific datasets, videos and archives.
Filecoin also supports smart contracts through its Filecoin Virtual Machine, enabling apps that combine storage with programmable logic. FIL has a maximum supply of 2 billion tokens.
