What is Pi Network?
Pi Network (PI) is a cryptocurrency project that started in 2019, created by a team of Stanford graduates. It became widely known for its mobile app, which let users "mine" Pi by tapping a button once a day instead of running powerful computers, attracting tens of millions of users around the world.
Pi uses a consensus model based on the Stellar Consensus Protocol, where users vouch for each other through trusted circles. For years, Pi could only be used inside its own closed network. Its open mainnet launched in February 2025, allowing PI to be traded on outside exchanges for the first time. To move coins to the mainnet, users must pass identity checks.
The project is building an ecosystem of apps where PI can be used for payments and services. Because of its large user base and long pre-launch phase, Pi's token distribution and unlock schedule are important to understand before investing.
