What is Polkadot?
Polkadot (DOT) is a blockchain network designed to connect many specialized blockchains into one shared system. It was founded by Gavin Wood, a co-founder of Ethereum, and launched in 2020. Its goal is to let different chains exchange data and value securely while sharing the same security.
Polkadot's central Relay Chain coordinates the network, while individual chains, called parachains or rollups, handle their own apps and logic. Each of these chains benefits from the security of Polkadot's validators without having to build its own set. Blockspace is now sold more flexibly through a system called Agile Coretime, and newer upgrades focus on higher throughput and support for Ethereum-style smart contracts.
DOT is used for staking to secure the network, for governance through Polkadot's on-chain voting system, and to pay for blockspace and fees. Polkadot's governance lets DOT holders directly decide on upgrades and treasury spending.
