What is POL (ex-MATIC)?

POL (formerly MATIC) is the native token of the Polygon network, one of the best-known projects working on scaling Ethereum. Polygon's main chain, Polygon PoS, offers fast transactions with very low fees and is widely used for payments, stablecoin transfers, games and tokenized assets.

In 2024 MATIC was upgraded to POL. POL is used to pay gas fees on Polygon PoS and for staking to secure the network. Polygon is also building AggLayer, a system meant to connect many different blockchains so users and liquidity can move between them easily, as if they were one network.

Polygon has worked with many large companies and financial institutions on payments and tokenization, and it has become one of the leading networks for stablecoin payments. POL has a small, ongoing issuance that funds validators and a community treasury.
