What is Solana?
Solana (SOL) is a high-performance layer-1 blockchain built to process thousands of transactions per second at very low cost. It was founded by Anatoly Yakovenko and launched its mainnet beta in 2020. Solana combines proof-of-stake with a technique called Proof of History, a cryptographic clock that helps validators agree on the order of events quickly.
SOL is used to pay transaction fees and is staked with validators to secure the network, earning staking rewards in return. Because fees are usually well under a cent, Solana has become a hub for trading, memecoin launches, payments, NFTs and consumer apps. Its decentralized exchanges regularly handle some of the highest volumes in crypto.
Solana had several network outages in its early years, which led to major work on client software and reliability. New validator clients such as Firedancer aim to increase both speed and resilience, and the network has grown into one of the most active ecosystems alongside Ethereum.
