What is Gram (prev. Toncoin)?

The Open Network (TON), whose coin is now listed as Gram (previously Toncoin), is a layer-1 blockchain originally designed by the team behind the Telegram messaging app. After Telegram stepped back from the project in 2020 because of regulatory pressure, an independent community continued building it, and it later received renewed support and integration from Telegram.

TON is built to scale with a multi-blockchain design: a main chain coordinates many work chains, which can split into smaller shard chains when activity grows. This lets the network process large numbers of transactions quickly and cheaply. Its close link to Telegram lets millions of users access wallets, games, mini-apps and payments right inside the messaging app.

The coin is used to pay transaction and storage fees and is staked by validators who secure the network. Many popular "tap-to-earn" games and mini-apps within Telegram launched on TON, bringing large numbers of new users into crypto.
