What is Uniswap?
Uniswap (UNI) is the governance token of Uniswap, one of the largest decentralized exchanges in crypto. Launched on Ethereum in 2018 by Hayden Adams, Uniswap popularized the automated market maker (AMM) model, where users trade against pools of tokens supplied by others instead of an order book.
Anyone can create a market for a token or deposit funds into a pool and earn a share of trading fees. Newer versions added concentrated liquidity, which lets liquidity providers focus their funds on specific price ranges, and hooks, which allow developers to customize how pools work. Uniswap runs on Ethereum and many layer-2 networks, and it also launched its own chain, Unichain.
UNI was released in 2020, partly through an airdrop to past users. Holders vote on changes to the protocol and on how the community treasury is used, including proposals around protocol fees.
