What is Aave?
Aave (AAVE) is the governance token of Aave, one of the largest lending protocols in decentralized finance. On Aave, users can deposit crypto to earn interest or borrow assets by providing collateral, with interest rates set automatically based on supply and demand.
Aave started in 2017 as ETHLend, a peer-to-peer lending platform, and relaunched in 2020 with pools that anyone can supply to or borrow from. It pioneered features such as flash loans, which are loans taken and repaid within a single transaction. Aave runs on Ethereum and many other networks, and it also has its own stablecoin, GHO.
AAVE holders vote on changes to the protocol, including which assets can be used and how risk is managed. The token can be staked to help protect the protocol against shortfalls, and part of protocol revenue has been used to buy back AAVE.
