What is Algorand?
Algorand (ALGO) is a layer-1 blockchain founded by Silvio Micali, a Turing Award–winning cryptographer and MIT professor. It launched in 2019 and is designed to be secure, fast and decentralized at the same time, with transactions reaching finality in about three seconds and very low fees.
Algorand uses Pure Proof-of-Stake, in which block producers are chosen randomly and secretly from token holders, making it hard for attackers to target them. The network has never forked since launch. It supports smart contracts, native tokens and atomic transfers, and developers can build apps in Python and TypeScript.
ALGO pays transaction fees and is staked to take part in consensus and earn rewards. Algorand has been used for tokenized real-world assets, payments and digital identity, and it has worked with governments and companies on several blockchain projects.
