What is Chainlink?
Chainlink (LINK) is a decentralized oracle network that connects blockchains to data and systems from the outside world. Smart contracts cannot fetch information such as asset prices, weather data or payment results by themselves, and Chainlink solves this by using many independent node operators to deliver data that has been checked and agreed upon.
Chainlink Price Feeds secure a large share of DeFi, telling lending and trading apps the value of collateral so they can work safely. Beyond data, Chainlink offers verifiable randomness for games and NFTs, automation for smart contracts, proof of reserves and the Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP), which lets tokens and messages move between blockchains. Banks and financial market firms have used Chainlink in tokenization pilots.
LINK is used to pay node operators for their services and can be staked to help secure the network. The token was launched in 2017, with a total supply of 1 billion.
