What is Litecoin?
Litecoin (LTC) is one of the oldest cryptocurrencies, created by former Google engineer Charlie Lee in 2011. It was based on Bitcoin's code but made faster and cheaper to use, which is why it is often called the "silver to Bitcoin's gold".
Litecoin produces a block every 2.5 minutes, four times faster than Bitcoin, and uses the Scrypt mining algorithm. Its supply is capped at 84 million coins, and like Bitcoin its block reward halves about every four years. Litecoin was an early testing ground for upgrades such as SegWit and the Lightning Network, and later added optional privacy through MimbleWimble Extension Blocks (MWEB).
Thanks to its long track record, low fees and reliable uptime, LTC is widely supported by exchanges, wallets and payment processors, and it is commonly used for payments and transfers between platforms.
