What is NEAR Protocol?
NEAR Protocol (NEAR) is a layer-1 blockchain built to be fast, cheap and easy to use. It launched in 2020 and uses a sharding design called Nightshade, which splits the network into parallel pieces so it can handle more transactions as demand grows.
NEAR focuses on user experience. Accounts use human-readable names instead of long addresses, and apps can cover fees for their users. Chain Signatures let a NEAR account sign transactions on other blockchains, including Bitcoin and Ethereum, which supports its goal of "chain abstraction", where users don't need to think about which network they're on.
The project has also positioned itself as a home for user-owned AI, supporting AI agents and research tools. NEAR tokens pay for transactions and storage and are staked with validators to secure the network, and part of every fee is burned.
