What is Stellar?
Stellar (XLM) is an open blockchain network built for fast, low-cost payments and for issuing digital versions of real currencies and assets. It was founded in 2014 by Jed McCaleb and Joyce Kim, and it is supported by the non-profit Stellar Development Foundation. Transactions settle in about five seconds and cost a tiny fraction of a cent.
Stellar uses the Stellar Consensus Protocol, where nodes choose which other nodes they trust instead of relying on mining. The network has a built-in decentralized exchange and path payments, so someone can send one currency while the receiver gets another. Stablecoins such as USDC and payment services like MoneyGram use Stellar for remittances and cash access.
XLM, called lumens, pays transaction fees and is required as a small minimum balance for each account, which helps prevent spam. Smart contracts arrived with Soroban, opening the network to DeFi and tokenization projects.
