What is Tether?
Tether (USDT) is the largest stablecoin in the world, designed to hold a steady value of one US dollar. It was launched in 2014 and is issued by Tether Limited, a company connected to the Bitfinex exchange. Each USDT is meant to be backed by reserves held by the issuer, mostly short-term US Treasury bills, cash equivalents and smaller amounts of other assets such as gold and bitcoin.
USDT is the most traded cryptocurrency by daily volume. Traders use it to move in and out of positions without converting back to a bank account, and it is the main quote currency on most centralized exchanges. It is also widely used for cross-border payments and savings in countries with high inflation or limited access to US dollars.
USDT exists on many blockchains, including Ethereum, TRON, Solana and several others, with TRON carrying a large share of transfers because of its low fees. Tether publishes regular reserve attestations, although its transparency has been questioned in the past, so it is worth understanding the issuer risk that comes with any centralized stablecoin.
