What is Bittensor?
Bittensor (TAO) is a decentralized network that creates an open marketplace for artificial intelligence. Instead of a single company training and owning AI models, Bittensor rewards people around the world for contributing useful machine intelligence, such as models, data processing and computing power.
The network is organized into subnets, each focused on a specific task like text generation, image creation, data scraping or prediction. Within each subnet, miners provide AI services and validators score their work. TAO rewards are distributed based on how valuable their contributions are, which encourages competition and quality.
TAO follows a supply model inspired by Bitcoin, with a maximum of 21 million tokens and halvings that cut new issuance over time. The first halving took place in 2025. TAO is used for staking, registering subnets and accessing the network's AI services.
