What is Cardano?
Cardano (ADA) is a proof-of-stake blockchain founded by Charles Hoskinson, one of Ethereum's co-founders, and developed by Input Output (IOG) along with the Cardano Foundation and Emurgo. It launched in 2017 and is known for its research-driven approach, with many of its core designs published and peer-reviewed before being built.
Cardano's consensus protocol, Ouroboros, lets ADA holders delegate their coins to stake pools without locking them up or giving up ownership. Smart contracts arrived in 2021 with the Alonzo upgrade, using an extended UTXO model that makes transaction costs predictable before they are sent.
With the Voltaire era, Cardano introduced on-chain governance, allowing ADA holders to vote on proposals, treasury spending and protocol changes through elected representatives. ADA is used for fees, staking and governance, and its supply is capped at 45 billion coins.
