What is Dai?
Dai (DAI) is a decentralized stablecoin that aims to stay at one US dollar. It was launched by MakerDAO in 2017 and was one of the first stablecoins that didn't depend on a single company holding dollars in a bank. Instead, users create DAI by locking crypto assets as collateral worth more than the DAI they borrow.
If the value of collateral falls too far, it is automatically sold to protect the system, which keeps DAI fully backed. Over time, the protocol also added real-world assets such as US Treasury bills to its reserves. The Dai Savings Rate lets holders earn interest from protocol revenue.
In 2024 MakerDAO rebranded to Sky and introduced USDS as DAI's upgraded version, with the option to convert between them one-to-one. DAI continues to exist and remains widely integrated in DeFi apps across Ethereum and other networks.
