What is Internet Computer?
Internet Computer (ICP) is a blockchain developed by the DFINITY Foundation, founded by Dominic Williams. It launched in 2021 with the goal of running entire applications, including their websites, data and back-end logic, directly on a blockchain instead of on cloud servers.
Apps on Internet Computer run as smart contracts called canisters, which can serve web pages to users and store large amounts of data. The network uses a "reverse gas" model: developers pay for computing with cycles, so users can often use apps without paying fees. Chain Fusion technology lets Internet Computer apps hold and use native bitcoin and ether without traditional bridges.
ICP is used to buy cycles, which are burned to pay for computing, and to take part in governance through the Network Nervous System. Holders can lock ICP in "neurons" to vote on proposals and earn rewards.
