What is Monero?
Monero (XMR) is a cryptocurrency built for privacy by default. Launched in 2014, it hides the sender, receiver and amount of every transaction, so balances and payment histories are not visible on its public blockchain. That makes every coin interchangeable, a property known as fungibility.
Monero achieves this with several techniques. Ring signatures mix a sender's input with others so the real one cannot be identified. Stealth addresses create a new one-time address for each payment. RingCT hides amounts while still letting the network confirm no coins were created from nothing. Users can share view keys when they need to prove a payment.
XMR is mined with proof-of-work using RandomX, an algorithm designed to run well on ordinary computers so mining stays spread across many people. After its main emission ended in 2022, Monero moved to a small, permanent "tail emission" of 0.6 XMR per block to keep miners paid. Because of its privacy features, some exchanges in certain regions have delisted it.
