What is Zcash?
Zcash (ZEC) is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency launched in 2016. It was built on Bitcoin's codebase and shares its fixed supply of 21 million coins, but adds optional privacy using zero-knowledge proofs called zk-SNARKs. These proofs let the network confirm that a transaction is valid without revealing the sender, receiver or amount.
Zcash supports two kinds of addresses. Transparent addresses work much like Bitcoin, with details visible on the public blockchain. Shielded addresses hide transaction details, and users can share a viewing key if they need to prove their history for audits or compliance. Modern Zcash wallets increasingly shield funds by default.
ZEC is mined with proof-of-work and follows a halving schedule similar to Bitcoin's. Development is led by the Electric Coin Company and the Zcash Foundation, and the cryptography Zcash pioneered has since influenced privacy and scaling research across the wider blockchain industry.
