Every word has a story. We try to tell it accurately.
Where the texts come from
Every piece is either in the public domain (we cite the edition or archive we took it from), published with the rights-holder's permission, or contributed by a reader who confirms they may share it. We do not copy other websites' editions, translations or transliterations.
Honest attribution
Many lines are shared online under the wrong name. Each page says whether the attribution is verified in an authoritative edition, only commonly attributed, or disputed — and why.
Translations and meanings
Translations, transliterations and explanations are written for Shawords and credited on each page. Explanations are reviewed by an editor before they are published.
