A poet is a person who studies and creates poetry. Poets may describe themselves as such or be described as such by others. A poet might simply be the creator who creates (composes) poems, or someone who also performs their art to an audience.
"I can no more believe old Homer blind, Than those who say the sun hath never shined; The age wherein he lived was dark, but he Could not want sight who taught the world to see."
"When a mans verses cannot be understood, nor a mans good wit seconded with the forward child understanding, it strikes a man more dead than a great reckoning in a little room.—Truly, I would the gods had made thee poetical."
"In this American moment, its fundamentally queer to be a poet, to be interested in what cant be packaged or sold in the marketplace, queer to enjoy the fundamentally useless, contemplative pleasure of poetry. Queer means that which is not business as usual, not solid identities founded on firm grounds, but a world in question."
"Poets are the unacknowledged legislators of the world."
"Poets are those who love truth and want justice."
"There is a pleasure in poetic pains, Which only poets know."
