Quote#Truth

In this world of lies, Truth is forced to fly like a scared white doe…

Quote byHerman Melville · 1819–1891

Commonly attributed — not confirmed in an authoritative edition. Cited on Wikiquote to: Hawthorne and His Mosses (1850), Since at least 1954 this has also been published at times as "Truth is forced to fly like a sacred white doe…", apparently a typographical error..

English (original)

In this world of lies, Truth is forced to fly like a scared white doe in the woodlands; and only by cunning glimpses will she reveal herself, as in Shakespeare and other masters of the great Art of Telling the Truth, — even though it be covertly, and by snatches.
