Rent is a rock musical with music, lyrics, and book by Jonathan Larson. Loosely based on the 1896 opera La bohème by Giacomo Puccini, Luigi Illica, and Giuseppe Giacosa, it tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists struggling to survive and create a life in Lower Manhattan's East Village, in the thriving days of the bohemian culture of Alphabet City, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS.
"Gentlemen, our benefactor on this Christmas Eve, whose charity is only matched by talent, I believe. A new member of the Alphabet City Avant-Garde: Angel Dumott Schunard!"
"The heart may freeze, or it can burn. The pain will ease, if I can learn. There is no future, there is no past. I live this moment as my last. Theres only us, theres only this. Forget regret, or life is yours to miss. No other road, no other way, no day but today."
"I think they meant it when they said you cant buy love. Now I know you can rent it. A new lease, you are my love. On life."
"Ive longed to discover something as true as this is"
"Theres only now, theres only here. Give in to love, or live in fear. No other path, no other way, no day but today."
"(Mimi)There is no future, there is no past. I live this moment as my last."
